This historial discovery bears a portrait of Captain Explorer navigator and Lord of
Limoilou, Jacques Cartier, discoverer of the today’s Canada, who on 19 March 1534, received by the King of
France, François 1er, the mission of " faire le voyage de ce royaume es terres pour découvrir certaines yles
où l’on dit qu’il se doibt trouver grant quantité d’or et autres riches choses » ( make this travel at the
name of the kingdom to discover new land and islands where it said that we might found gold and other riches
things).

The portrait of Jacques Cartier, who appears on the banknote add a great historical importance
of the X1Xe century, because it’s the art work of the great master portraitist french Canadian, Theophile Hamel,
who was inspired by an old portrait, preserved at St Malo in France. In 1867 the Master Hamel has exibit some of
his works at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Among his recognized historical works, there are the portrait of
the explorer and cartographer Samuel de Champlain, the Generals Montcalm, Levis, Woolfe and Murray, but the
"Jacques Cartier" is without any doubt, the one which has established and maintained his reputation as a Grand
Maitre canadian portraitist "by excellence" of the 19th century.

On 24 July in Gaspé, Cartier erected a cross of 30 'with the inscription
"Vive le Roy de France" making official the
discovery of the "New France".
